The Importance of Proper Positioning for Optimum Comfort and Productivity
May 27,2008

Watch your back...

A friend of mine just forwarded an article from Men's Health that I found really interesting. Having been involved in the office furniture industry for many years, I've heard numerous times the importance of sitting in a good office chair, being careful of too much reaching, stretching, twisting, etc., but this article really adds a little more clarity as to why it's so important.

The article mentions how it's common for people to spend as much as 93% of their workday seated. And while we all believe an office job is "safer" than some other occupations, that's not necessarily the case where it concerns your back.

The article suggests we take breaks from sitting. For example, stand up when you're on the phone. And rather than emailing your coworkers, walk over to get the answer to your question.

Something I plan to look into is a Kneeling Chair. I have found those to be comfortable, although I've never sat in one full-time. The article recommends keeping your hips at more of a 120-135 degree angle (rather than the 90-degree angle of a regular office chair) in order to keep your spine in a neutral position, so the kneeling chair seems to be a great alternative.
